The Maldives: A Part of Paradise
The Maldives is an island republic. Official name of it is the Republic of Maldives. This island country is located near Indian Ocean. The capital of it is Malé. It is the smallest Asian country. However, it is important as the Maldives is a tourism center.
Since its first inhabitation, different countries controlled the Maldives. It is predicted that in 3 BC, Buddhists lived here. Then, Portuguese and Dutch Empires controlled it. In 19th century, the Maldives was under the control of Britain. At last, the Maldives declared its independence from United Kingdom in 1965.
The economy of the Maldives is mostly depends on tourism. Additionally fishing, shipping, banking, and logistics contribute to the country economy. Its geography is the point making it a unique part of the world. The Maldives is the lowest country of the world. Its latitude is just 2 meters. The population is not dense; approximately 360.000 people live in the Maldives. Islamic population dominates the country. Official language is Dhivehi. It is an Indo – Aryan language.
Transportation options to the Maldives are not various. There is not railway system. There are two harbors named Gan and Malé. The easiest transportation is by air. There is more than one airport in the Maldives.
There is speculation about the Maldives. It is claimed that Maldives will stay under water due to global warming. That is expected to occur in a century. The sea level rises every year. This also threats the Maldives.
