Common pregnancy symptoms and signs
The symptoms of pregnancy change from one pregnancy to another. There are many common and uncommon early pregnancy signs and symptoms. If you are suspect that you are a pregnant, you can do a pregnancy test at home. If the test shows positive, that means you are pregnant. But you should try again in 4 or 5 days just to be sure.
Following is a list of early signs and symptoms of pregnancy and what they mean.
Missed Menstrual Period:
Missed period (called amenorrhea) is considered the sign of pregnancy. But the delay does not mean you are pregnant. Because the delay of menstruation can be caused by many factors including illness, stress, jet lag, hormonal changes, extreme weight gain, anorexia, birth control pills, etc. Tracking your menstrual cycle lets you know when to expect the time of menstruation.
Fatigue (Tiredness):
The level of hormone progesterone rises in blood. Fatigue is a result of the high levels of this hormone. Your body is working overtime for the baby throughout the pregnancy. Because of this you feel very tired. Fatigue appears in the first eight to ten weeks.
Nausea and Vomiting:
It is commonly known as morning sickness. Up to 70 percent of pregnant have nausea. A hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) causes it. You can experience nausea in the first trimester of the pregnancy. It can appear at any time during the day. But sometimes nausea may continue from time to time in the second trimester of pregnancy.
Implantation Bleeding:
It is one of the common symptoms of pregnancy. You may spot 9-10 day after the fertilisation. It is a vaginal discharge and contains small amount of pinkish or brownish blood.
Frequent Urination:
Most of the women go to the bathroom more often throughout the pregnancy. The uterus is getting larger. The growing uterus presses against the bladder. This causes frequent urination.
Headaches:
Most of the women experience headaches throughout the pregnancy. Hormone levels and blood circulation increase in the first trimester. They are more common in pregnancy due to blood circulation and hormone levels. Headaches are a symptom of pregnancy but are not a sign of pregnancy.
Food Cravings:
Most of the women feel cravings for some food when they are pregnant. Hormonal changes cause food cravings in the first trimester. You may crave ice-cream, fruits, meat and sweets.
Tenderness of Breasts:
Your breasts are beginning to enlarge. They become sore to the touch. It appears during the first few weeks of pregnancy.
Other symptoms you may experience:
Swelling in the legs and ankles, abdominal pains, insomnia, heartburn, hair loss, breathlessness, nasal congestion, elevate basal body temperature (BBT), variation in skin colour around the nipple, weight gain, anaemia, etc.
