There is ambiguity about where and when it emerged. However, the first samples of Turkish marbling date back to the centuries ago. Colors are transferred to the paper from water surface so it is known as the art of writing on the water surface.

Paper marbling is also known as the art of patience, as learning and being a master of it requires long long years and consistency. You write on the surface of water, it looks impossible, doesn’t it? Every step of marbling requires special care; first of all, you should prepare everything in advance. Water is used, yet it is mixed with a thing like gum, this mixture should be neither liquid nor solid. Powder colors are prepared with water and ox gall. This process is generally found disgusting but without it, colors can not be kept on the surface of the water. The brushes are hand made from rose branch and hair of horse; these materials are used in order to keep bacteria and other things. After all that is ready, drops of colors are sprinkled on the surface, the figures can be shaped with some other additional objects and the great view is transferred to the paper. There are many types of marbling art depending on the way of making it.

Learning this traditional Turkish art requires master and apprentice relationship, reading about it, watching or trying it are not enough to make a successful piece of work. Firstly, the apprentice learns the methods, history, clues from master, and making the first marbling may take a long time. People who are consistent, patient, and talented manage to give masterpieces which can be done only once as no one can make the same figures twice on the surface of water.
