Louis Braille is the inventor of Braille Alphabet system. When Louis Braille was a child, an accident changed all his life. While playing with a knife, the knife was stuck in his left eye, instead of taking him a doctor, his father took him to a woman, who has no education about medicine, and wrong treatment made him totally blind. When he was taken to doctor, it was too late; both of his eyes were blind.

Louis grew up and he was sent to a school which is for blinds, the education was only through listening and learning by heart. Writing and reading systems were tried, but they were all useless. Louis Braille began to work on that issue, while he was working; he tried every way, used stick, string, nail, and many other different materials. He got the idea of a special alphabet for blinds from an officer, a French officer was using a code system to transfer messages and this officer showed the system to Louis and head of the school. It did not seem quite all right, but it was a big clue for Louis Braille.

Braille thought that an alphabet that consists of dot points instead of sticks is suitable for blind people. He made many attempts about that and finally he found a writing system with six dots in 1825. With these dots, he formed all the alphabet letters.

The first people learning Braille system were friends of Louis, dots on paper were also enjoyable to learn. There were people who favor the system, while there were also ones opposing it, especially his teachers opposed, they said that the alphabet will categorize blind people differently from other people, and they claimed that it is very hard to learn and adopt it. The alphabet was approved officially only after Braille’s death.

What Braille Alphabet Brings
Invention of Braille Alphabet was a revolution for blind people who experience many difficulties in reading, writing, learning, following the day. Imagine you are closed in a colorless world, would not it be difficult? No reading, no writing, only listening and imagining, Braille Alphabet provided many chances to blind people.

Education became easy and available for everyone, books were published with dots system, special parts were established in libraries, from a very early age people are educated. There are book collections written in this form.

Writing has been a significant process for human being every time, through writing, we inherit heritage, next generations know what we tell, with Braille Alphabet, blind people had the chance to transfer their own knowledge and memories.

Nearly in every country there are campaigns to increase literacy, blind people have a great part in the society, and they make contribution to these campaigns by learning Braille alphabet.

If you know Braille system, you do not need anyone to read you something; you do not have to wait for someone else. It brings freedom, freedom of reading, freedom of learning and freedom of choosing!

Personal development is an advantage of this system. Blind people are confident, happy, educated if they have equal opportunities with other people, Braille creates that chance.
